This 1997 Westwood game had good intentions. If you have an amazing strategy game, you HAVE to make it online. But there were many flaws? The main issue is that you don?t control a big army with resources, but a single unit. You select this unit before the game starts, and they include: recon bikes, artillery, infantry, tanks and dinosaurs. To add some diversity to the game, Westwood included three game modes: Free-for-all, Capture the flag and Football. In Free-for-all, basically you have to kill anything that moves because it?s everyone against everyone. In Capture the flag, there?s a bit more strategy involved. You have to obtain the enemy?s flag first, accessing their base and therefore carefully destroying their home units. Finally, there?s Football. It?s pretty much like capture the flag but it uses undefended goals instead of bases making it a quicker mode. For some, Sole Survivor didn?t have much to do with the original concept of the game. This sort of deathmatch-style (supported for up to 50 players in a match) has little strategy, letting down many followers. It?s not a bad game, you just have to know what you are buying, a quick simple multiplayer game. Sole Survivor hasn?t got a monthly charge and the server and usability from Westwood are very good.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert - The Aftermath



The Aftermath is a heck of a deal that practically turns Red Alert into an entirely new game. The secret to making a good expansion set isn't a well kept one. After all, hordes of Command & Conquer fans frothed at the mouth as they filled newsgroups and chat channels with wish lists of things they hoped would be provided in the previously disappointing C&C mission discs. Seemingly, Westwood was listening: Red Alert: Aftermath is the definitive expansion pack by which all others in this genre will be judged.At long last, Aftermath provides brand-new units to the Red Alert franchise in both the single-player and multiplayer modes of the game (Counterstrike only had some new single-player units). There are seven new recruits in all. The new, Soviet-only units include Shock Troopers, Tesla tanks, missile subs, and M.A.D. tanks. The Allies can now produce mechanics and missile-bearing Chronotanks. Both sides can also build the suicidal and speedy demolition trucks that can easily level structures upon collision. These units dramatically change the strategy in the game, as they serve to strengthen both sides' weaknesses. For example, the missile sub gives the Soviets some much-needed seafaring offensive power by allowing the sub to fire onto land. On the other side, the Allies' mechanic repairs tanks during combat, thus giving them the ability to stand up to the better-armored Soviet counterparts. The M.A.D. tank and demolition truck make base defense all the more important as those units can destroy buildings if allowed to get close enough. Also important to note is that Aftermath changes (or rather, corrects) some structure attributes to balance the once lopsided factions. Allied turrets now fire twice as fast, in addition to having stronger firepower. Also, building more than two factories no longer speeds production (designed to stop multiplayer tank rushes), and the Allied Gap Generators aren't quite as strong (fewer hit points, and Soviet Spy Planes can see through their black shroud for longer).In addition to improving gameplay through unit additions and alterations, Aftermath includes 100 multiplayer maps and 18 new single-player missions of varying difficulties. There is also the introduction of "mega" sized maps, which can comfortably house an eight-player battle. Unfortunately, these cannot be made in the map editor (though it's a safe bet that someone on the Internet will make an editor that can). Fans of Red Alert's excellent musical score will be happy to know that Aftermath comes complete with eight new techno tracks to listen to during the carnage. At a low price of around twenty bucks, the Aftermath expansion pack is a heck of a deal that practically turns Red Alert into an entirely new game. If you're bored with Red Alert, or want to breathe some new life into your multiplayer matches, this is an outstanding add-on that shouldn't be passed up.

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun Firestorm



While Firestorm offers only a few changes and additions to the original game's graphics and sound, it succeeds in reinvigorating Tiberian Sun's gameplay. Firestorm is a well-made expansion pack to Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun that enhances the original game by adding interesting new military units and enjoyable, challenging single-player scenarios. While Firestorm offers only a few changes and additions to the original game's graphics and sound, it succeeds in reinvigorating Tiberian Sun's gameplay. Firestorm's new unit and background graphics blend right in with Tiberian Sun's original appearance. Considering the game's visuals never looked very impressive to begin with, they've actually aged fairly well, as both the old and the new military units in Firestorm are cleanly animated, just as the game's special effects are carefully detailed. Its few new music tracks are similar to the many tracks in the original, though fans of the Command & Conquer soundtracks will be pleased to hear even more music from Westwood's composers. Unfortunately, Firestorm's plain or comical sound effects are also virtually unchanged. The best new feature in Firestorm is the new units it introduces to both the GDI and the Brotherhood of Nod factions. Although the expansion doesn't offer a huge variety of new units, the additions manage both to further differentiate the two warring sides and to significantly expand their strategic options. For instance, the GDI's devastating new triple-barreled Juggernaut walker allows for long-range bombardment, letting the GDI pound on enemy units and demolish base defenses from a safe distance. However, the unit is slow and must lock into firing position before it can attack. Nod's new spiderlike cyborg, the reaper, doesn't have such obvious shortcomings; the reaper's multiple missile launchers can attack both ground and air targets, while its antipersonnel web attack can immobilize groups of infantry. Both GDI and Nod also get limpet drones, which can burrow themselves and latch onto enemy vehicles, slowing them to a crawl. Both sides also get to produce mobile war factories, which are slow-moving vehicles that can set up shop at any point and begin producing additional vehicles remotely. Mobile factories offer an interesting tactical opportunity for ambushes, and they are particularly effective for the Brotherhood, whose new mobile stealth generator can hide the factory from its opponent's sight. The expanded unit arsenal in Firestorm further accentuates each side's advantages, but it also gives each side new tools with which to defend against its rival's new tricks. Though Firestorm is action packed just like previous Command & Conquer games, it's more strategically rewarding than its predecessors were, due to its wider variety of tactical options and countermeasures. Firestorm is consequently a more interesting game to play, but it's also more difficult. The heightened challenge extends to Firestorm's two new campaigns, which include nine new missions each for GDI and for Nod. The new scenarios are lengthy and difficult, and they often demand that you complete a number of objectives to achieve victory. The missions begin with full-motion-video sequences similar to those in Tiberian Sun, though the likes of Hollywood personalities Michael Biehn and James Earl Jones are nowhere to be found. The new cutscenes aren't exactly Academy Award quality, regardless, but they'll appeal to Command & Conquer fans anyway, and they do a good job of lending context to Firestorm's missions. Noninteractive story sequences also unfold at particular times during the actual missions, making the proceeds seem more meaningful. Firestorm's plot picks up directly where Tiberian Sun left off, and it also suggests the direction in which the Command & Conquer series will continue.Firestorm adds additional features to the game's random-map generator for skirmishes and multiplayer matches, letting you further customize the type of battlefield you'd like to play on. The game also includes more than a dozen new multiplayer maps, as well as the new multiplayer mode that lets you take sides in a persistent online battle to control territories across the globe. Firestorm's extensive multiplayer features ensure the game's longevity on Westwood's integrated online play servers, just as the game's crafty computer opponent should make the single-player campaigns and skirmish games enjoyable for anyone who liked Tiberian Sun. If you liked Tiberian Sun's fast gameplay and its time-honored play mechanics, you'll be pleased with Firestorm's substantial improvements.

Command & Conquer: The First Decade



Electronic Arts' COMMAND & CONQUER series has been one of the most popular real-time strategy games in existence, and now players can check out twelve of the games on one CD with the COMMAND & CONQUER THE FIRST DECADE collection. The games are interesting combinations of science-fiction storylines and history. In COMMAND & CONQUER: RED ALERT, for example, players find themselves in an alternate history where the allied forces are battling Stalin and a powerful Russia instead of Germany because, after inventing a time machine, Einstein killed Hitler. It's interesting storylines like this that make the series so much more than the typical RTS game. Twelve different COMMAND & CONQUER games are included in THE FIRST DECADE package, including the original game, RED ALERT, TIBERIAN SUN, RENEGADE (a first-person shooter set in the C&C universe), RED ALERT 2, YURI'S REVENGE, C&C GENERALS, ZERO HOUR, and more. All have been updated to run on Windows XP. All of the games take different approaches and are often set in different worlds, although some are direct sequels. However, the well-written storylines and addictive gameplay remain the same through each game, with each successive game tweaking the mechanics a bit. Players will find the first C&C game does play a bit differently than the more recent ones, but the controls aren't so outdated as to make the game no longer fun. Fans of the COMMAND & CONQUER series who missed a few installments should pick up the COMMAND & CONQUER THE FIRST DECADE pack.

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun



Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun is a sequel to Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn and Command & Conquer: Renegade, and predecessor to Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, the main storyline follows the second war between the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod taking place in 2030, roughly 30 years after the end of Tiberian Dawn. Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun follows the continuing struggle for world domination between the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod, and the struggle between humanity and the alien Tiberium substance. The game story is a follow up to the original, in which the Nod leader Kane resurfaces from death with renewed vigor, funds, and manpower. Red Alert was praised for its user interface, which claimed to be more developed than the competing games of its time. Players could queue commands, create unit groups that could be selected by a number key, and control numerous units at a time. The game was known to be easy to control, simple to learn and responsive to users commands. It also featured two factions that had differing styles of play. Red Alert is also hailed as one of the first games to feature competitive online play. The single player campaign also received high praise for its detailed story line and missions which often required the player to defeat the enemy with various sets of circumstances before continuing. Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 is the sequel to the popular 1996 spin-off of Westwood's definitive real-time strategy game.
